GREAT PLACES FOR ALL AGES

Where We Live: Communities for All Ages

100+ Inspiring Ideas from America's Mayors

Looking for ways to make your community an even better place to live for people of all ages? Check out these ideas for making your streets safer and more walkable, helping neighbors live comfortably and independently, and much more.

Take a Walk … Audit
Get a few friends together to conduct a sidewalks and streets survey with the AARP Walk Audit Tool Kit. Then share your findings with elected officials and other local leaders. The tool kit provides step-by-step instructions for examining intersections, sidewalks, driver behavior, public safety and more. And since it’s user directed, a walk audit can take as little or as much time as you choose.

Leave the Car at Home
Going totally car-free, while cost effective and environment-friendly, is not for everyone. A more workable option might be committing to bicycling or walking several times a week and encouraging others to do the same. Want to give it a shot? Here are 10 tips to get you started.

Home Safe Home
Most people want to stay in their homes and communities for as long as they possibly can. Help a neighbor or a loved one turn their home into a “lifelong home” with the AARP HomeFit Guide, which shares smart solutions for making a home comfortable, safe and a great fit.
